About the College:

The Govt. College of Art & Crafts, Assam, Guwahati is a distinguished Institute for Visual Art Training & Imparts Education in the field of Fine Arts. It is the pioneer institute of the kind in the entire region of North East India. Situated amidst the lush greenery and hills near the legendary Basistha temple, the college possesses the ideal serene ambience.

Campus:

The Govt. of Assam has allotted a plot of Land Measuring 20 Bighas, Vide Govt. of Assam Revenue Dept. Order No. : RSS/474/77/34 dated 6.11.79 at Basistha, Guwahati – 29. The college has been functioning from this premises ever since its inauguration on 23rd Sept, 2005 by the then Hon'ble Chief Minister of Assam.

Location:

The college is situated at Basistha Temple road, Basistha in the metropolitan city of Guwahati, in the Kamrup Metropolitan District of Assam (India). The college is about 2 K.M. from the N.H. 37 point of Basistha Chariali, about 10 K.M. from the Inter State Bus Terminus, and about 18 K.M. from the Guwahati Railway Station. The LGB International Air Port is at a distance of about 30 K.M. from the college.

Connectivity:

The college is well connected by road and regular city bus services are available to and from the college.

Course of studies:

The college of Art offers Five (2+2+1) years integrated Course of training in the subjects of Art, leading to a Bachelor of Fine Art Degree. The first 2 years of the course comprise the Preparatory Course while the later 3 years (Part- I & Part- II) offers Specialization in any one of the following subject:

    1. Painting
    2. Applied Art
    3. Sculpture
    4. Graphic Art
    5. All these subjects along with Language subjects (MIL/ Eng), and Crafts are compulsory at Preparatory level. The subject of History of Art is compulsory subject from 1st to 5th year class.

Intake Capacity:

The annual intake capacity for admission to each session is minimum 30, which may increase from time to time depending upon the space.

Session:

The new session starts from August & Fresh admission process starts by May / June

Admission & Method of Application:

Admission to Govt. College of Art & Crafts, Assam, Guwahati are open to all citizens of the Union of India, who seek admission and with a requirement that they have passed the HSLC/HSSLC or equivalent examination with minimum qualifying percentage.

Selection Procedure:

All eligible candidates for the Course of Bachelor of Fine Art will be required to sit for a compulsory admission test held by the College Authorities.

Candidates are expected to bring their own art materials like – Pencils, Paint Box, Brushes, and Eraser etc. for the test. Candidates are expected to have considerable general knowledge in the field of Art theoretically, especially in reference to the present art scenario of Assam. The mode of Admission test conducted consists of a practical performance test, basic theoretical knowledge test and after the screening and viewing of scripts. Only the successful candidates will be eligible for the viva–voce test. Admission selection will be made by a prescribed committee and their decision will be final.

Merit list will be prepared based on the admission test, (including those for reserved and unreserved seats). List of candidates selected for admission will be displayed at the College notice board on the date of announcement, in accordance to the convenience of the authorities; Applicants are advised to make necessary inquiries at the College Office.

On receipt of the admission intimation, applicant should join the College on the opening day of the New Session i.e. 1st of August or on the date fixed by the College authority. No extension for joining time will normally be granted.

Examinations:

The annual Examinations in the First year and third year will be conducted by the college of Art and Crafts, the rest of the Examinations, i.e. Second year (Preparatory), Four year (BFA part-I), and fifth year (BFA part-II) Examinations will be conducted by the Gauhati University. The students in order to pass the Internal Examination must secure a minimum of 40% marks in Practical and 30% in theory (History of Art)

Annual Vacation:

The college remain closed on four chief vacations as prescribed by the Guwahati University and other Gazetted Holidays: - (I) The Summer Vacation, (II) The Rongali Bihu (III) The Puja Vacation and (IV) Winter recess, every academic year.

General Information for Candidates:

The number of seats for the above course is limited and admission will be decided on the basis of results of practical and written tests, and interviews conducted by the admission committee, the decision of the admission committee will be final.

  1. No Hostel facility is available as at present.
  2. All students will have to observe scrupulously the norms of discipline stipulated by the authorities while within the campus, and violation of these may lead to disciplinary action against the student concerned.
  3. All students will have to participate in the extracurricular activities of the institution.
  4. A minimum of 75% attendance is essential for students of all year to appear in the annual / final examination
  5. They are to qualify for the internal assessment as assessed by the Departmental teachers.
