The Govt. College of Art & Crafts, Assam, Guwahati is a distinguished Institute for Visual Art Training & Imparts Education in the field of Visual Arts. It is the pioneer institute of the kind in the entire region of North East India. Situated amidst the lush greenery and hills near the legendary Basistha temple, the college possesses the ideal serene ambience.
The Govt. of Assam has allotted a plot of Land Measuring 20 Bighas, Vide Govt. of Assam Revenue Dept. Order No. : RSS/474/77/34 dated 6.11.79 at Basistha, Guwahati – 29. The college has been functioning from this premises ever since its inauguration on 23rd Sept, 2005 by the then Hon'ble Chief Minister of Assam.
The college is situated at Basistha Temple road, Basistha in the metropolitan city of Guwahati, in the Kamrup Metropolitan District of Assam (India). The college is about 2 K.M. from the N.H. 37 point of Basistha Chariali, about 10 K.M. from the Inter State Bus Terminus, and about 18 K.M. from the Guwahati Railway Station. The LGB International Air Port is at a distance of about 30 K.M. from the college.
The college is well connected by road and regular city bus services are available to and from the college.
The college was offering BFA (Bachelor of Fine Art) 5 year degree from 1989-1990 session under Gauhati University upto 2022-2023 academic session.
The new and updated Four (4) years (8 semester) Bachelor of Visual Art (BVA) degree course under the Gauhati University starting from 2023-24 academic session, is a new and updated course with contemporary course content.
Old Course of Study :
The college of Art was offering Five (2+2+1) years integrated Course of training in the subjects of Art, leading to a Bachelor of Fine Art Degree. The first 2 years of the course comprise the Preparatory Course, while rest 3 years (Part- I & Part- II) offers Specialization in any one of the following subject :
All these subjects along with Language subjects (MIL/ Eng), and Crafts are compulsory at Preparatory level. The subject of History of Art is compulsory subject from 1st to 5th year class.
New Course of Study :
The Bachelor of Visual Art (BVA) programme is a modular four year (eight semesters) course consisting of :
i) Certificate course in Visual Art (first 2 semesters)
ii) Diploma in Visual Art (first 4 semesters)
iv) Advance Diploma in Visual Art (first 6 semesters)
v) Bachelor degree in Visual Art (8 semesters)
The course offers four specialization (honours) in Diploma, Advance Diploma and Bachelor degree course. Currently Specializations are offered in the following subject :
i) Applied Art
ii) Graphics (Printmaking)
iii) Painting
iv) Sculpture
The annual intake capacity for admission to each session is maximum 50, which may increase from time to time depending upon the space.
The new session starts from August & Fresh admission process starts by May / June
Admission to Govt. College of Art & Crafts, Assam, Guwahati are open to all citizens of the Union of India, who seek admission and with a requirement that they have passed the HSLC/HSSLC or equivalent examination with minimum qualifying percentage.
All eligible candidates for the Course of Bachelor of Visual Art will be required to sit for a compulsory admission test held by the College Authorities. Candidates are expected to bring their own art materials like – Pencils, Paint Box, Brushes, Erasers, Colors etc. for the test. Candidates are expected to have considerable technical and general knowledge in the Field of Art theoretically, especially in reference to the present art scenario.
The mode of Admission test :
i) Practical test
ii) Portfolio checking during the Viva-voce Test.
iii) Viva-voce Test
Selection will be made by a committee strictly in accordance to merit and on the basis of the marks stipulated as follows:
i) 50 marks for Practical Entrance Test
ii) 40 marks for Personal Interview (viva-voce)
iii) 10 marks for marks secured in the qualifying examination
The College remains closed on three chief vacations as prescribed by the Gauhati University viz. (i) The Summer Vacation/Semester Break (ii) The Puja Vacation (iii) The Rongali Bihu each year as well as other Gazetted Holidays.
