Information and services: The Govt. College of Art & Crafts, Assam, Guwahati is a distinguished Institute for Visual Art Training & Imparts Education in the field of Fine Arts. Established long ago in 1947, under the name of School of Fine Art & Crafts. The Art school was provincialized in 1970 and was upgraded to a Degree College in 1990. The only institution of its kind in the whole of North Eastern Region, the Govt. College of Art & Crafts facilitates the students with a Bachelor Degree in fine Art (BFA). Degree is conferred by the Guwahati University. The School started by Late Sri Jibeswar Baruah was carried forward by the commitment and dedication of Sri. Sobha Brahma, whose Guidance and Principal ship contributed in taking the Institution towards a valid direction in Art activity and individual creation. Today the College is privileged to have the service and association of several eminent artists and scholars who with their personal visual experience and artistic enlightenment has also richly contributed to the present status of the College.

 The Academic Programmed is broad based and introduces the students to a vast repertoire of techniques and art forms backed by the knowledge of history of Art. With studio practice, discussions, and annual Exhibitions, the art atmosphere of the Faculty is enlivened and the students get the opportunity to sharpen their artistic sensibilities.

The College at present has four major specialized streams of studies, namely Painting, Sculpture, Graphics, Applied Art and History of Art. Language subjects are compulsory in the preparatory years. There are interminglingamong the four disciplines so as to allow diversity in the different fields of Art.

Campus:

The Govt. of Assam has allotted a plot of Land Measuring 20 Bighas, Vide Govt. of Assam Revenue Dept. Order No. : RSS/474/77/34 dated 6.11.79 at Basistha, Guwahati – 29. The college has been functioning from this premises ever since its inauguration on 23rd Sep, 2005 by the then Hon’ble Chief Minister of Assam.

Course Study:

Integrated 5 (five) year B.F.A. Degree Course comprising of

(I)                 First Two (2) Year of Preparatory course

(II)               Third to fifth year of Specialization course

INTAKE CAPACITY

The annual intake capacity for admission to each session varies between 25 and 30 only.

GENE­­RAL INFORMATION FOR CANDIDATES

THE NUMBER OF SEATS FOR THE ABOVE COURSE IS LIMITED AND ADMISSION WILL BE DECIDED ON THE BASIS OF RESULTS OF PRACTICLE AND WRITTEN TESTS, AND INTERVIEWS CONDUCTED BY THE ADMISSION COMMITTEE, THE DECISION OF THE ADMISSION COMMITTEE WILL BE FINAL.

No Hostel facility is available as at present. All students will have to observe scrupulously the norms of discipline stipulated by the authorities while within the campus, and violation of these may lead to disciplinary action against the student concerned. All students will have to participate in the extracurricular activities of the institution. A minimum of 75% attendance is essential for students of all year to appear in the annual / final examination, and to qualify for the internal assessment as assessed by the Departmental teachers.

Admission & Method of Application:  Admission to Govt. College of Art & Crafts, Assam, Guwahati are open to all citizens of the Union of India, which they are seeking admission and provided they have passed the HSLC/HSSLC or equivalent examination with minimum qualifying percentage.

APPLICATION FORMS & SUBMISSION PROCEDURE

The application forms are available from the OFFICE OF THE PRINCIPAL, GOVT. COLLEGE OF ART & CRAFTS, ASSAM, BASISTHA, and GUWAHATI – 29.

Application duly filled in and accompanied by specified documents (given in the application form) are to reach on or before the prescribed date as announce in the advertisement issued generally during the months of June / July each year and handed over personally at the College office. Applications received after the prescribed date will not be considered.

 

All applications forms should be accompanied with attested copies of the following documents:-

(i)                 Birth Certificate / Age Certificate

(ii)               Pass Certificate of School Final Examination

(iii)             Mark sheet of last Examination appeared.

(iv)              Character Certificate from the Headmaster or Principal of the school / college last attended

(v)                Permanent Residential Certificate

(vi)              S.T. /S.C. Certificate (in case of candidates belonging to this category) / OBC, MOBC etc.

(vii)            Migration Certificate.

(viii)          Two Passport size photograph

(ix)              Medical Fitness Certificate

(x)                Fathers / Guardians Income Certificate

SELECTION PROCEDURE

All eligible candidates for the Course of Bachelor of Fine Art will be required to sit for a compulsory admission test held by the College Authorities.

Candidates are expected to bring their own art materials like – Pencils, Paint Box, Brushes, and Eraser etc. for the test. Candidates are expected to have considerable general knowledge in the field of Art theoretically, specially in reference to the present art scenario of Assam. The mode of Admission test conducted consists of a practical performance test, basic theoretical knowledge test and after the screening and viewing of scripts. Only the successful candidates will be eligible for the viva – voca test. Admission selection will be made by a committee will be final.

Merit list will be prepared based on the admission test, (including those for reserved and unreserved seats). List of candidates selected for admission will be displayed at the College notice board on the date of announcement, in accordance the convenience of the authorities, Applicants are advised to make necessary inquiries at the College Office.

On receipt of the admission intimation, applicant should join the College on the opening day of the New Session i.e. 1st of August or on the fixed by the College authority. No extension for joining time will normally be granted.

EXAMINATIONS

The annual Examinations in the First year and third year will be conducted by the college of Art and Crafts, the rest of the Examinations, ie Second year (Preparatory), Four year (BFA part-I), and fifth year (BFA part-II) Examinations will be conducted by the Gauhati University. The students in order to pass the Internal Examination must secure a minimum of 40% marks in Practical and 30% in theory (History of Art)

ANNUAL VACATION

The college remain closed on three chief vacations as prescribed by the Guwahati University and other Gazetted Holidays:- (I) The Summer Vacation, (II)  The Rongali Bihu  (III) The Puja Vacation and (iv) Winter recess , each year.

Courses Structure: The entire course as at par with other visual Art courses in India  is  called the  BACHELOR OF FINE ART (B.F.A).

Course of studies

The college of Art offers Five years integrated Course of training in the subjects of Art, leading to a Bachelor of Fine Art Degree with Specialization in any one of the following subject:

        I.            Painting

      II.            Applied Art

    III.            Sculpture

   IV.            Graphic Art

History of Art is compulsory subject from 1st to 5th year class

SYLLABI OF COURSE

B. Fine (Bachelor of Fine Art)

Duration 5 years.

It consists of two year preparatory and three year  specialization.

(A)  PREPARATORY COURSE (1st year & 2nd year)

Total Marks: 1000# Practical Marks: 700

Painting, Graphics, Sculpture, Applied Art and crafts are compulsory at Preparatory level.

The practical works include nature study, outdoor study and sketches, still life, crafts and design, Printmaking in wood and linocut, clay modeling and exercises in lettering and Typography etc.

Theory Marks: 300

Paper I                Aspects of Visual Art and Early Indian Sculpture

Paper II              Art of the Prehistoric and the Ancient world

Paper III             Language English & Sanskrit or MIL

(B)           Specialization Course

            (Part I & Part II)

Specialization to be opted in any one of the following streams – Painting, Sculpture, Graphics (Print Making) and Applied Art.

Part I:    Total Marks 1000. Theory (Common for all streams)

Paper I:    Western Art (Byzantine to the Early Renaissance)                          100 marks

Paper II:   Far Eastern Art (China and Japan)                                                      100 marks

Paper III:  Indian Art (Post Gupta to the coming of the British)                      100 marks

Practical:  Internal assessment and University Examination700 marks

Part II:     Total Marks 500. Theory (Common for all streams)

Paper I:   Western Art. (Modern Period) 100 marks

 Annual and sponsored Activities:  The activities of the college are multiflourious. From time to time Seminars, workshops are conducted in accordance to the sanctions and funds as plausible. Annual programmes mainly consists of the Annual display, annual Exhibitions and the Annual Picnics.

Present job opportunities: The present Job opportunities are innumerable…Many children go for the media and opportunities provided by the advertising world – both corporate and in corporal sectors. Since the course is professionally based, no qualified student lies unabsorbed and can find the suitable media for themselves. The opportunities of Design , and Visual communication has laid down a broad platform for all interested students…Most pass out student choose professional animation, cinematography , visual media ( Small screen and the Big Screen) . Some interested in Research work also acquire their base of study with visual understanding and Art History background, to move ahead for the conservation and preservation of cultural heritages. (Needless to state that Assam and the North East of India is a hub for ethnic Cultural studies.) . Some are again content to be teachers and professional Printmakers, sculptors and painters.
